20 Benefits of Fasting
Though they are great for the spirit, total fasts are particularly taxing on the body and mind. There are some things to keep in mind if you are attempting to abstain from food during your fast.
Work your way up. If you’ve never fasted before, a lengthy total fast will be very difficult to complete. Consider building your way up to your ultimate goal.
Drink plenty of water. Your body dehydrates very quickly without the benefit of the water in your food. Drink water almost continually.
Get plenty of rest. Avoid strenuous activities if at all possible. Go to bed early if possible.
Drink juice or clear broth if you get weak. If you feel like you need something besides water, try some juice. Be careful not to drink too much though. The acid and sugar in the juice may irritate your stomach.
Don’t let a moment of weakness bring condemnation. If you eat something, it is not the end of the world. Start back the next day if you’d like. Fasting has its benefits no matter how long you’re able to hold out.
